The OMS Anesthesia Team Model Needs Your Support
This week, the American Society of Anesthesiologists published a Joint Statement from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and the Society for Pediatric Sedation Regarding the Use of Deep Sedation/General Anesthesia for Pediatric Dental Procedures Using the Single-Provider/Operator Practice Model, which opposes the oral and maxillofacial surgery anesthesia team model for pediatric dental procedures.
The Statement, which was developed without input from the oral and maxillofacial surgery community, includes many inaccuracies and leaves the OMS Anesthesia Team Model, a proven and safe protocol for the delivery of dental office-based anesthesia, vulnerable to potential professional, regulatory and legislative opposition.
What Can You Do?
With your support OSOMSPAC is building strong relationships with influential Ohio legislators and their staff. This advocacy network has resulted in several successes that have strengthened the visibility and stature of the OMS specialty in our state. But, with our anesthesia model and privileges at stake, we must do more:
- Financially support OSOMSPAC's efforts to educate and work with the legislators, regulators and those decisionmakers in a position to influence the future of the OMS Anesthesia Team Model. Our success requires contributions from every Ohio OMS to the PAC. The future of the specialty is at risk.

Contribute to OSOMSPAC now
- Enroll in the AAOMS's OMS Quality Outcomes Registry (OMSQOR®) and submit your anesthesia-related data to the Dental Anesthesia Incident Reporting System (DAIRS).
- OMSQOR collects and makes available aggregated clinical data and reports to allow participating OMSs to benchmark their performance to that of their peers, identify areas to target for improvement activities, and provide crucial information to assist AAOMS in advocating on behalf of its members.
- The DAIRS is a central data collection source where aggregate data may be used to substantiate the value and safety of the OMS anesthesia team model. All data submitted to DAIRS are kept as privileged in a secure, HIPAA compliant database, and there is no cost to participating providers.
- OMSQOR collects and makes available aggregated clinical data and reports to allow participating OMSs to benchmark their performance to that of their peers, identify areas to target for improvement activities, and provide crucial information to assist AAOMS in advocating on behalf of its members.
Together we can assure that our specialty and the OMS Anesthesia Team Model remain strong and effective for the next generation of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and their patients.
The Ohio Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Political Action Committee (OSOMSPAC) represents the oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Ohio. OSOMSPAC's purpose is to advocate on behalf of its constituency to state legislators and public officials in support of the specialty and patient safety.
