OMS Foundation announces new international service opportunity for residents

The OMS Foundation will unveil its new Global Initiative for Volunteerism and Education (GIVE) program at the 2018 AAOMS Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill. GIVE offers residents the opportunity to accompany experienced OMS teams delivering urgently needed medical care to underserved communities around the world.

The Foundation expects to award five $2,500 GIVE travel stipends in 2019 to residents seeking to expand their clinical experience along with their world view through international volunteer service.

To participate, host volunteer surgical programs and residents must apply separately to the Foundation. Volunteer surgical teams interested in providing an opportunity for a resident to accompany them on an upcoming trip are invited to submit an application now. Residents may apply for a 2019 GIVE travel stipend after Nov. 1. Learn more and download program and resident applications at https://omsfoundation.org/research-education/funding/give/

Foundation Director Dr. Thomas P. Williams was inspired by his own experiences as a surgical volunteer to propose a humanitarian service program for residents when the Foundation was seeking to expand its programs portfolio in 2017.

“The opportunity to provide help to someone in need is a privilege, and it has had a huge impact on my life,” he said. “We’re pleased to offer this opportunity to residents without the burden of travel costs.”

Funding for GIVE comes from the OMS Foundation Alliance and from individual donors like you. Please consider a generous gift to the Foundation in 2018 to support this and other worthy programs. Contributions of $2,500 or more made before Dec. 31 will be recognized with a leaf on the AAOMS Centennial Tree. Learn more and donate at OMSFoundation.org/support/giving/annual-fund.
