ASA Endorses Joint Statement Opposing the OMS Pediatric Anesthesia Team Model

ASA Endorses Joint Statement Opposing the OMS Pediatric Anesthesia Team Model

We learned late last week the American Society of Anesthesiologists has partnered with three other organizations to publish a document concerning its recommendations for personnel when pediatric anesthesia is administered in a dental office. The document – titled Joint Statement from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and the Society for Pediatric Sedation Regarding the Use of Deep Sedation/General Anesthesia for Pediatric Dental Procedures Using the Single-Provider/Operator Practice Model – has been published today on the ASA website.

In essence, the document recommends a "multi-provider team-based safe practice model," which involves the provision of a second well-trained professional capable of monitoring the patient, managing the airway, establishing venous access for the administration of rescue operations, and resuscitation. Given that the document focuses on the OMS team model, we feel it necessary to alert the AAOMS membership of this publication to guard against any surprises that may surface. We also recognize that our members use various anesthesia models in terms of personnel, particularly in regard to pediatric patients. AAOMS members should be aware that this statement does not impact their ability to continue practicing as they have, which is based on your state's required permit or certificate process.

AAOMS has always had a close relationship with the ASA, so our leadership was taken by surprise when we learned of the new joint statement. The AAOMS Board of Trustees is currently evaluating the optimal response to this statement.
