OSOMS President's Update - July 2017

Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.”  - Marian Wright Edelman

Dear OSOMS Member,

Two years have come to pass since being nominated and elected to the role of vice president in this wonderful society. I have been fortunate to learn from past presidents and colleagues as they navigated challenging and often politically charged waters. By blending their experience with mine, as president, I plan to aggressively face the issues that challenge our specialty. I am no stranger to leadership roles and I enjoy speaking on behalf of our profession to ensure that our voice is heard.

You have a hard-working executive board that comes from all corners of the state. The board meets on a scheduled quarterly basis and communicates electronically more frequently to discuss and act on important topics that may affect the membership. Current issues on our radar include changes in the regulatory process for the prescription of opioids in the state of Ohio as well as continued national scrutiny of our time-honored model of anesthesia delivery.

Our specialty is thriving and evolving in part because each generation of surgeons has felt a duty to service. I encourage all members, but especially my junior colleagues, to attend a quarterly meeting and experience the energy of the board. I challenge you to get involved and let your voice be heard on the issues that speak to you the most.

I look forward to this year of service and I hope you will join me in that spirit.

Sincerely,

Kelly S. Kennedy, DDS
